Former Dallas police office found GUILTY of murder of a man in his home

After a deliberation that took less than 24 hours, a Dallas jury found ex-police officer Amber Guyger guilty of murder when she shot her unarmed neighbor, Botham Jean, back in September 2018. The former officer claimed she was unable to get into what the thought was her apartment, despite other claims that she furiously knocked on the door, demanding someone to ‘open up’.

Shortly after the verdict, the attorney representing Botham Jean’s family tweeted the following reaction to the guilty verdict.

The events that took place sparked national outrage in the midst of various police shootings in where unarmed black men and/or women were killed as a result.

While this is a victory on behalf of Botham Jean and the family, we still have a long way to go, addressing the issue of black and brown people being murdered at the hands of those sworn to protect and serve. Guyger, 31, now faces a sentence of, up to, life in prison
